Colley Park – awarded £5,000

Colley Park, located in the Parsons Estate in Sheffield, is a much loved park that had fallen into disrepair over several years. Local people living near to the park formed The Colley Park Community Group to campaign for its redevelopment.

Funding from Barclays SiteSavers helped the group to work with Groundwork to design and build a toddlers’ ball game area.

The idea for the project came when local volunteers visited a number of other play areas for young people within Sheffield. In a series of consultation days, young people worked with a local artist and came up with a series of designs focusing on the sky and the sun. The young people also made models and sculptures of their artwork and depicted how they could be turned into a piece of play equipment for toddlers to practice their ball skills.

A number of events were held, which led to a huge community gala involving Barclays staff from the nearby Sheffield branch and Sir Peter Middleton, Chairman of Barclays plc all getting their hands dirty by picking up litter and painting murals.
