Edlington is a small town near to Doncaster which has suffered at times from crime and anti-social behaviour – problems made worse by a notable lack of play and recreation facilities.
Local community groups, determined to tackle these problems led calls to develop a run down recreational ground and provide play areas to accommodate the needs of the 6-12 year olds, toddler and picnic areas and improvements to the football pitch. With support from Groundwork, detailed designs for each proposal were produced and approved and work soon got underway.
Once complete, the new picnic area and general re-landscaping improved the recreation ground for all age groups by creating a pleasant, accessible space. Working together on the project also brought the community together and increased community spirit by developing the skills and confidence of those who took part, while also providing the much-needed facilities. In addition, reported incidences of crime and anti-social behaviour decreased through the provision of diversionary activities for young people.
