Bovey Heathfield Community Project – Awarded £4,155

Bovey Heathfield is public land that used to be surrounded by industrial estates and used for various types of anti-social behaviour including vandalism, car dumping, illegal scrambling and fly tipping. Because of this the site was not suitable for general public use.

The nearest housing estate is 800 metres away and local people have worked alongside The Devon Wildlife Trust to create a community wilderness for informal recreation and education. The project developed paths and seating designed to attract visitors and create a central meeting point.

The project resulted in the formation of a partnership between the Wildlife Trust, the local community, the local authority and English Nature. Following purchase of the site, a site restoration programme began, which involved close liaison with the Police to curb crime and any further anti-social behaviour. Huge quantities of rubbish along with approximately 60 burnt out vehicles were removed from the site, and security improved through additional fencing. The site became a focus for educational and training opportunities have also been provided for local schools and colleges.

Ultimately, the project created an easy access path and trail using a technique restoring uneven terrain without detracting from the wild and natural atmosphere of the site. The site is now accessible for wheelchairs, pushchairs and bicycles and due to the methods used high volumes of visitors has been concentrated away from sensitive areas. The track also guides visitors to a 'figure of eight' around the heathland, past key features such as new ponds and ancient monuments, providing a safe and enjoyable experience.
