Legacy

During the nine years that the programme ran, Barclays SiteSavers provided the opportunity for local people of all ages and backgrounds to get practically involved in designing and creating vibrant new spaces from parks and gardens to playgrounds, sports facilities and nature reserves.

The full amount of funding that Barclays SiteSavers generated for communities over a nine-year period was £26,300,000.

From 1996 to 2005, Barclays SiteSavers :

• delivered more than 970 projects, bringing derelict land back into use on inner city housing estates, on the edge of towns and cities and in the heart of rural communities
• reclaimed waste land totalling over 590 hectares
• improved more than 114,000 metres of walk way
• planted more than 101,500 trees and 354,900 shrubs
• engaged 45,980 children
• engaged 29,980 adults
• involved a total number of 75,960 people
• enlisted the support of 1,710 Barclays staff

In 2004, to coincide with the first season of the Barclays Premiership a successor to Barclays SiteSavers was announced. A new £30million community initiative to create sustainable sports facilities across the UK was to be launched the following year as a partnership between Barclays, the Football Foundation and Groundwork.

The scheme, called Barclays Spaces for Sports, also provides kit and equipment and would represent the single largest injection of cash into grassroots sport ever committed by a corporate company in the UK.
