Barclays SiteSavers was a programme aimed at helping communities take
more control of their surroundings by reclaiming underused and derelict
land to create much needed recreational areas in their neighbourhoods.
It provided funding to enable groups of local residents to take action
to transform derelict eyesores into dynamic places for play, education,
relaxation and fun.
Between 1996 and 2005 Barclays SiteSavers encouraged 76,000 volunteers of all ages to give up their time and get practically involved in designing and creating or improving 1000 spaces from parks and gardens to playgrounds and nature reserves. The programme invested in the aspirations of local people, helping them to confront dereliction, vandalism, graffiti and wasted space to create communities that were cleaner, greener and safer.
